Kaizer Chiefs endured another frustrating evening after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay FC in a Betway Premiership clash played on Tuesday night at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.
The result means the Phefeni Glamour Boys have now gone three seasons without beating the Natal Rich Boys on their home turf — a statistic that underlines their struggles away in KwaZulu-Natal.
Defensive Disruption Before Kick-Off
It was a chaotic build-up for head coach Cedric Kaze, who was forced into an emergency reshuffle before a ball was kicked. Inacio Miguel sustained an injury during the warm-up and had to be replaced by Bradley Cross, while the suspension of Zitha Kwinika further destabilised the backline.
That defensive instability proved costly.
Gumede Punishes Chiefs
Thulani Gumede struck the decisive blow with the only goal of the evening, a finish that ultimately earned him the Man of the Match award and secured maximum points for Richards Bay.
Chiefs battled to find rhythm, and while debutant Nkanyiso Shinga impressed with an energetic display, his promising first outing ended prematurely as he was stretchered off due to injury.
The home side could have extended their lead late on, but Knox Mutizwa failed to beat Bruce Bvuma in a one-on-one situation in the dying minutes, keeping the scoreline respectable for Amakhosi.
Kaze Reflects on Costly Mistakes
Speaking in his post-match interview on SuperSport, Kaze admitted the defensive changes disrupted his side’s structure.
“We conceded a goal on a silly mistake and I believe, as well, that we were a little bit shaky in our defence. Probably, as well, the injury of Miguel (Inacio) during the warm-up and the suspension of Zitha (Kwinika). We had to change the whole defence as well. I believe that mostly that cost us the game, but we have to do better. We have to do better.
And the only thing is to go back to the training field and work very hard. And, as well, hope that we get back our players from the defence that are injured and suspended.”
Title Challenge Slipping Away
The defeat marks a fourth consecutive loss in all competitions for Chiefs, who now find themselves 11 points adrift of the league leaders. Their grip on mounting a serious title challenge continues to weaken with each passing week.
For Richards Bay, the victory lifts them to ninth place on 23 points — a significant boost in their campaign.
For Amakhosi, however, Kaze and Khalil’s woes deepen, with mounting pressure as the season threatens to drift further off course.
