Mamelodi Sundowns Star Nuno Santos Urges Winning Mentality as Brazilians Chase Orlando Pirates in PSL Title Race

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Nuno Santos has quickly become an important piece in the Brazilians’ attacking puzzle since arriving at Chloorkop, with the Portuguese playmaker steadily winning over South African football fans through his creativity and influence in the final third.

Since joining Masandawana, Santos has featured in 22 matches across all competitions, contributing four goals and seven assists. The attacking midfielder has slotted seamlessly into coach Miguel Cardoso’s attacking system, where his vision, movement and ability to unlock defences have added another dimension to Sundowns’ already potent forward line.

His growing influence comes at a crucial stage of the title race. With Orlando Pirates dropping two valuable points in a 1–1 draw against Siwelele FC on Saturday, the door has opened slightly in the battle at the top of the table. Sundowns currently sit second, just one point behind the Sea Robbers, and will be eager to capitalise on any slip-ups as the race intensifies.

For Santos, however, the focus remains simple: approach every match with the right mentality.

“In football, there are no easy games; we have to go with the right mentality, intentions, and focus on the game so that we can have a great game and, most importantly, get the 3 points.”

While Sundowns will be confident of mounting a strong push, they will have to do so without several key players. The Brazilians are expected to be without Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba, while midfielder Jayden Adams — who has impressed since returning to the squad — will also be absent. Adams’ recent performances earned him a place in the preliminary Bafana Bafana squad set to face Panama national football team later this month.

Despite the absences, Sundowns remain one of the most formidable sides in the league, and players like Santos will be expected to step up as the club looks to reclaim top spot. With the title race tightening and every point now carrying added weight, the Brazilians know that maintaining focus — exactly as Santos emphasised — could make the difference between chasing and leading the pack.
