“I never thought as a kid I would be here. Yeah, the dream come true. Unfortunately we did not win, but I’m proud of the team.”
The Bafana Bafana star admitted emotions were running high after helping his country earn a crucial point on football’s biggest stage.
“I don’t know how I’m feeling. I’m so excited. The way we fought today, I think everyone back home is proud and yeah, man, we showed up.”
He also praised the bravery shown by the squad throughout the encounter.
“The way we played, the way we showed up, we are brave, we are confident on the ball. We are also good off the ball. So I think the team did very well today and we can be proud of ourselves.”
The midfielder believes the team’s performance showed significant improvement from their opening match of the tournament.
“For the first game, we didn’t do well, but today I think the comeback was so, so good. I’m very proud of the team.”
While the result has given South Africa renewed belief heading into their final Group A fixture, there was disappointment for the Sundowns midfielder. His yellow card during the contest was his second of the tournament, meaning he will miss Bafana Bafana’s decisive clash against South Korea through suspension.
His absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the point earned against Czechia ensures that South Africa remain firmly in the race for a place in the knockout stages. With confidence restored and momentum on their side, Bafana Bafana will now turn their attention to South Korea knowing that victory could secure a place in the next round.
For one night, however, the story belonged to the Bethlehem-born midfielder whose composure from 12 yards kept a nation’s World Cup dream alive.
