Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng believes Bafana Bafana’s young squad has shown it can compete with some of the world’s best after making his FIFA World Cup debut against Czechia.
The highly-rated midfielder was introduced at the start of the second half in place of Jayden Adams and immediately added creativity and attacking intent in the final third as South Africa battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the European outfit.
Mofokeng’s introduction helped Bafana Bafana gain more control in attacking areas, with the 21-year-old showing the confidence and flair that has made him one of the country’s most exciting young talents.
Speaking to Sporty TV after the match, Mofokeng highlighted the team’s determination to compete against top opposition on the global stage.
“I think the most important thing is to compete. We just came here to compete. I think I’m also one of the people who can compete, so I came here to compete, nothing more.”
The Orlando Pirates star also backed the quality of South African football, insisting players from the Premier Soccer League are capable of holding their own against international opposition.
“I also believe I play in one of the best leagues. I think I can compete anywhere. If we can compete here, you can compete anywhere in the world, in any league.”
His comments will resonate with many South African football supporters who have repeatedly called for the country’s brightest young talents to test themselves abroad at an earlier age.
For several years, there has been a growing belief that players such as Mofokeng possess the quality to succeed in Europe, with many fans arguing that regular exposure to elite competitions could further accelerate their development and ultimately benefit the national team.
The youngster’s performance against Czechia only strengthened that view, as he looked comfortable against experienced international opponents and showed glimpses of the attacking quality that has made him a fan favourite.
Despite earning a valuable point in their opening encounter, Mofokeng insists Bafana Bafana remain fully focused on securing maximum points in their remaining fixtures.
“No expectations. We just need to fight for the three points. If we get the three points, we have higher possibilities.”
South Africa’s next challenge comes against South Korea, who suffered defeat to Mexico in their second match. With Mexico already having secured qualification for the next round, the battle for the remaining qualification spot remains wide open.
