Lebogang “DJ Naves” Naves: “I’m excited at the return of football but most importantly that fan base that always gets its hopes up; the breakdowns are amazing to watch.”

Lebogang “DJ Naves” Naves is a well-known figure in South Africa’s music industry, renowned as a radio host at iGagasi FM, DJ,entreprenuer ,father, friend and podcaster. Beyond his musical prowess, Naves is also an ardent supporter of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, a passion that runs deep.

As the new Betway Premiership season approaches, DJ Naves shared his excitement: “I’m excited at the return of football but most importantly that fan base that always gets its hopes up; the breakdowns are amazing to watch.”

While showboating is a hot topic among football enthusiasts, Naves offers a balanced view: “Showboating… I think it has its place at Kasi games, but I’m not sure at the professional level.”

Coach Rulani Mokwena’s move to Morocco has garnered much attention, and Naves expressed his well-wishes: “Coach Rulani is a son of the soil, and we can only wish him the best as he is representing South Africa.”

When it comes to young talent, Naves is optimistic about the future: “It’s so difficult to say when we say youngster, but I will go for Mfundo Vilakazi, Relebohile Mofokeng, Siyabonga Mabena, and Ntando Nkosi.”

Discussing the trend of South African players moving to North African countries, Naves sees it as a positive development: “Well, let’s look at Champions League football. What part of Africa has won the most titles? I think it can only benefit our players. You have seen what Sundowns playing in Africa did for Bafana.”

Fan engagement is another area where Naves believes improvements can be made: “Very difficult this one, but we definitely need to find a way to get bums on seats. We are in a place where the competition for eyes is high, the economy is not so strong, so maybe lowering ticket prices. I’m not sure about this one; it would need a thorough investigation.”

As a devoted Mamelodi Sundowns fan, Naves is unwavering in his support: “As a Mamelodi Sundowns fan… if at any stage you expect me not to say Sundowns, then I don’t know. Sundowns on all cups.”

Balancing his passion for football with his career in the entertainment industry, Naves reflects on the similarities: “Football is close to my heart; it’s how we made friends growing up. It’s what we dreamt about becoming as kids. I am unfortunately an extremist; I do what I have to do to keep enjoying the game. Similarities are there always; breaking into the industry is not easy, it’s highly competitive with zero barriers to entry.”

Recalling his most memorable football moment, Naves shares: “Winning Champions League in Alexandria, Egypt, priceless.”

As the Betway Premiership season kicks off, DJ Naves remains a dedicated advocate for football and music, continually bridging the gap between these two dynamic worlds. His insights and experiences provide valuable perspectives for both fans and aspiring young players.
