Mark Haskins, a name synonymous with South African football, has had a remarkable journey from playing on the field to analyzing the game off it. With a career spanning various teams including Moroka Swallows, Jomo Cosmos, Bidvest Wits, and SuperSport United, Haskins has left an indelible mark on the sport. In his current role as a football analyst at SABCSports and a Technical Consultant at Centre Circle (player management company with the likes of Christian Pulisic, Victor Wanyama, Njabulo Blom and Bafana Bafana Captain Ronwen Williams as clients ), as he continues to contribute to the football world.

Throughout his career, Haskins has encountered some of the most exceptional talents in the game. When asked about the top five greatest footballers he has watched, he highlighted Zinedine Zidane, Andreas Iniesta, Ronaldo Luis Nazario De Lima (R9), Ronaldinho, and Lionel Messi. For Haskins, these players stood out due to their exceptional skill, grace, and ability to make football look effortless.

Reflecting on his playing days, Haskins shared insights into the best five players he had the privilege of playing with. From the versatile Sam Magalefa to the skillful Manuel Tico-Tico Bucuane, and the complete footballer Ashley Hartog, Haskins acknowledged the exceptional talents of his former teammates. He also praised the goalkeeping prowess of Ronwen Williams and the enduring athleticism of Sibusiso Zuma.

When asked about the best coach he played under, Haskins singled out Brazilian Coach Julio Leal for bringing out the best in him and instilling confidence in his abilities. Haskins also revealed his respect for formidable opponents, naming players like Tinashe Nengomasha, Clint Sephadi, Marawaan Bantam, Shane Poggenpoel, Kagiso Dikgacoi, and Yeye Lesholonyane as those who presented a stern test on the field.

Recalling his most memorable goals, Haskins highlighted strikes against Jomo Cosmos, Maritzburg, and Wits as collector’s items, showcasing his prowess from range. His love for analyzing games was sparked during his formative years, watching English Premier League highlight shows on Monday nights, and he has since transitioned seamlessly into his role as a football analyst at SABC Sports.

Haskins also faced adversity when he ruptured his ACL shortly after joining Moroka Swallows, a challenging period that tested his resilience. However, with a strong support system and the birth of his son, he battled through to make a remarkable recovery.

Growing up in Eldorado Park, where professional teams were scarce, Haskins honed his skills playing in the streets, attributing his love for the game to those formative years. Despite the lack of professional support, his childhood was a cherished time, thanks to the unwavering support of his parents.

In his current role as a Technical Consultant , Haskins has learned the importance of collaboration in the Player/Agent space, emphasizing the need for a mutually beneficial relationship.
