Magesi FC Triumphs in Carling Knockout Semifinal

In a dramatic semifinal clash at King Zwelithini Stadium, Magesi FC pulled off a sensational 1-0 victory over Richards Bay FC, earning them a place in the Carling Knockout final. This triumph marks a significant achievement, as Magesi becomes only the second team in 21 years to reach the cup final in their first season in the Premier Division.

The game started with a tight exchange, as both teams probed for an early advantage. The first real opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Richards Bay’s Tlakusani Mthethwa unleashed a powerful left-footed strike, only to be denied by a razor-sharp save from Magesi’s veteran keeper, Elvis Chipezeze. Minutes later, Yanela Mbuthuma tested Chipezeze again with a header, but it lacked the power to break through. The match took a sudden turn in the 27th minute when Richards Bay’s Tshepo Mabua made a costly error, allowing Magesi’s Tshepo Mashigo to capitalize with a well-placed strike, putting Magesi in the lead.

This opening goal sparked new intensity on both sides, with Justice Figuareido nearly equalizing for Richards Bay by hitting the post. Chipezeze, however, was a brick wall, making six crucial saves in the first half alone. The experienced Zimbabwean keeper came into this game with back-to-back Man of the Match awards and showed why he’s earned that recognition. Richards Bay’s frustrations mounted as Mthethwa was the first player booked before halftime, and in the 84th minute, he was sent off with a second yellow, leaving his team with ten men.

The second half saw Richards Bay surge forward, with Wonderboy Makhubu leading the charge and the relentless duo of Figuareido and Somila Ntsundwana pushing Magesi’s defense to its limits. Yet, every attempt to equalize was met with defiance from Chipezeze, including a powerful header from Keagan Allen that seemed destined to level the score.

At the final whistle, Magesi celebrated a remarkable victory, punching their ticket to the Toyota Stadium for the Carling Knockout final. They now await the winner of the second semifinal between Marumo Gallants and Mamelodi Sundowns. With this historic run, Magesi FC is proving that they belong among the elite in South African football.
